🛏️ The Budget Route (Ashrams)

- The Struggle: Beds are hard. No AC (only fans). Toilets might be Indian squat style (bring your own toilet paper).
- Strict Curfew: Gates close at 10:00 PM. No alcohol or meat allowed inside.
✨ The Comfort Route (Hotels)
For those who need Western comforts
If you are an international tourist wanting a hassle-free, comfortable stay with Western toilets and AC, DO NOT stay in an Ashram. Choose these instead:
- Backpacker Luxury: Zostel Varanasi (D32/1, Dashashwamedh). AC Dorms, clean western toilets, foreigner-friendly crowd. (₹700 – ₹1000/Night)
- Premium Heritage: BrijRama Palace (Munshi Ghat). Right on the river, 5-star service. (₹15,000+/Night)
Day 1: Station Arrival & Escaping Touts
14:00 (2:00 PM)
📍 Exact Exit Route
Do not stop inside the station.
Exit from Gate No. 1. Walk straight 200m out of the railway compound to the Main Road (Cantt Chauraha). Take a LEFT turn. Look for yellow sharing e-rickshaws.
⚠️ The “Information” Trap
Never ask auto-drivers for directions.
If you are lost, walk into a Medical Store or a Grocery shop. Show them this flashcard:
मैं रास्ता भटक गया हूँ। क्या आप मुझे इस पते का सही रास्ता बता सकते हैं?
“I am lost. Can you point me in the right direction for this address?”
⚠️ Transport Negotiation Hack
They will quote 300+ INR. Do not argue.
Show them this screen. If they say no, turn around and walk away. They will call you back.
📱 SHOW TO RICKSHAW DRIVER:
मुझे अस्सी घाट जाना है शेयरिंग में। मैं सिर्फ 50 रुपये दूंगा। चलना है तो चलो, वरना रहने दो।
“I want to go to Assi Ghat in sharing. I will only pay ₹50. Take it or leave it.”
MAX PRICE: ₹50 INR / PERSON
The First Ritual: Kaal Bhairav Temple
16:30 (4:30 PM)
🛕 The “Police Chief” of Kashi
You must visit here FIRST.

Local tradition mandates taking permission from Kaal Bhairav (The Kotwal/Guard of Kashi) before visiting any other temple in the city. Take an auto from Godowlia to Visheshwarganj.

- DON’T: Do not fall for priests asking for heavy donations. Fold your hands, drop ₹10-₹20 in the donation box, say “No Hindi” and walk away.
Evening Ghat Walk & Aarti
17:30 (5:30 PM)
📍 Walk to Dashashwamedh
45 Min River Walk
Step down to Assi Ghat steps. Keep the river on your right and walk North across the connected ghats to reach the main Aarti. The Aarti starts at 6:30 PM.
- Viewing Hack: Don’t sit on the crowded stairs. Hire a seat on the wooden boats parked at the ghat for ₹100-₹150 for an unobstructed water-view.
⚠️ The Fake Guide Scam
Reject “Free Tours” immediately.
Touts will offer you a free tour of the burning ghats (Manikarnika) and later extort heavy donations for “cremation wood”. Show this:
“I don’t need a guide. Leave me alone.”
Dinner (Foreigner Safe)

Where to eat & How to order
Stick to Pizzeria Vaatika (Assi Ghat) for hygienic wood-fired pizza and Apple Pie (₹400), or the Ashram Canteen for boiled Satvik veg food (₹50). When ordering anywhere else, use these flashcards:
OPTION A: ZERO SPICE (SAFE)
“Please make my food completely non-spicy, NO chili.”
OPTION B: MEDIUM SPICE (LOCAL TASTE)
“Please keep the spices and chili medium/normal.”

📸 Best Viewpoints
Panoramic Photography

Day 3: Sarnath & Sankat Mochan
09:00 AM
📍 Outskirt Excursions
Sarnath & Monkey Temple
- Sarnath (10 KM away): Where Buddha gave his first sermon. Book an Ola/Uber Auto directly (₹200). Do not take a sharing auto; it wastes hours. No guides needed. Entry fee: ₹300 for foreigners.
- Sankat Mochan Temple: Dedicated to Hanuman. DON’T: Beware of monkeys! Do not carry food in your hands, do not wear sunglasses on your head, and do not make direct eye contact with the macaques. They will snatch things.
Evening Silk Shopping
16:00 (4:00 PM)
⚠️ The Banarasi Silk Scam
Never trust Rickshaw drivers for shopping.
Drivers will enthusiastically offer to take you to “Wholesale silk factories”. It is a scam. They sell cheap Chinese polyester as pure silk, and the driver gets a 40% commission. Walk to reputed showrooms in Godowlia market yourself.
📱 SHOW THIS IF FORCED INTO A SHOP:
मुझे शॉपिंग नहीं करनी है। मेरे पास कोई एक्स्ट्रा पैसा नहीं है।
“I don’t want to do any shopping. I don’t have any extra money.”
Day 4: Leaving Varanasi
Checkout
📍 Getting back to the Station/Airport
Plan your exit carefully.
Varanasi traffic can freeze unexpectedly due to VIP movements or religious processions.
- If heading to the Airport, leave 4 Hours early.
- If heading to the Railway station, keep a 1.5-hour buffer.
📱 NO BARGAIN TRANSPORT HACK:
मुझे कैंट रेलवे स्टेशन (या एयरपोर्ट) जाना है। जो मीटर/ओला में रेट आएगा, मैं वही दूंगा।
“I want to go to Cantt Railway Station (or Airport). I will only pay the fare shown on the Ola/Uber app meter.”
